Reading At Belmont Cheveley Park Primary School, we are on a mission to create a community of capable and passionate readers. We believe that reading can open doors for our pupils and can help them to gain experiences, improve language and vocabulary skills, whilst also stimulating their imaginations. In order to achieve this, every child is taught a range of strategies to support them in becoming a confident, independent reader. We intend to nurture a love of books by exposing our children to a wealth of rich children’s literature. We introduce these texts with enthusiasm and enjoyment, and carefully select books which will excite and engage our children by providing opportunities for real-life experiences which deepen their comprehension.
Writing At Belmont Cheveley Park Primary School, we intend for our curriculum to enable all our pupils to leave us with the ability to communicate effectively in writing. To achieve this, we ensure that our children are exposed to a range of exemplar texts, from across different text-types and subject areas, as well as explicitly identifying and teaching ambitious new vocabulary. Carefully planned and progressive teaching of key grammar and punctuation skills ensure our children can communicate in writing effectively. We aim to establish a clear purpose and desire to write by selecting engaging class texts as stimuli, and carefully planning for real-life experiences which excite and inspire.
Speaking and Listening It is our intent that children at BCPPS will become confident communicators as we believe the ability to communicate effectively will lead to improved life opportunities for all. We believe that providing children with opportunities to develop their spoken listening comprehension is crucial for their future ability to read with comprehension and write effectively. Therefore, we strive to produce children who are increasingly eloquent and able to communicate in a variety of ways. We build in opportunities to expand and embed vocabulary and encourage talk in all areas of our curriculum, as well as ensuring our children are immersed in a stimulating language environment within our school.
