Physical Education Intent Statement

Be confident communicators

Be knowledgeable

Be a good citizen

Be adventurous

Be ambitious

At Cheveley Park Primary School, we aim to develop a fun, high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel individual’s abilities in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health (both physical and mental) and fitness. We intend that our children will have opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. This, in turn, aids our children to be good citizens.

PE at Cheveley Park is an imperative element of the curriculum, which develops a need for healthy lifestyles, a balanced diet, positive growth mindset and the resilience to persevere with activities that may be once have felt too difficult. We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

Children at Cheveley Park engage in weekly high-quality PE and sporting activities. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events which promotes our children to be ambitious. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being for all pupils.

All children from Year 1 to 6 have at least 2 hours’ worth of planned physical exercise each week. Children from Year 1 to 6 also have the opportunity for physical activity during playtimes on our well-equipped school grounds, stocked with resources. Staff and Playground Leaders (trained pupils from Year 5 and 6) are on duty to co-ordinate a range of active playground games. Having our playground leaders scheme encourages our children to be confident communicators.

Inter-house competitions take place regularly in KS1 and KS2, giving house-captains and sports/playground leaders a chance to develop their sports and leadership skills. Each half term a different sport or area of the curriculum is the focus of the competition. The points gained throughout the competitions are added to the house totals and contribute towards regular prizes and awards.
